SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Nov. 6 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The rector of the University of La Laguna, Francisco García, has conveyed to the members of the Governing Council the concern that he and his counterpart at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Lluís Serra, have regarding the progress of the budgets of the University. autonomous community by 2024, of which an increase of only 2% has been known for higher education centers.
Francisco García pointed out that given the change in regional government it was evident that there was not going to be a program contract that would imply a stable and predictable financing framework for the university system, but neither was there going to be a horizon like this. “There has been a clear agreement with the Department of Universities regarding the financial insufficiency of public universities, and in fact in the case of La Laguna there has been a cut in the last 15 years of 24%. That is why we have received with surprise and disappointment in the forecast increase for 2024”.
The rector added that fiscal regulations prohibit the use of treasury remnants to control public spending, which he called “austericide” since it further aggravates the situation.
He explained that the two rectors have issued a public statement to show their unanimous position on this matter, and that they hope that in the parliamentary process the situation can be improved in the amendment phase.
“Just in the contracting of the usual services (cleaning, security, electricity…) there is more than four million increases since 2021, which until now have been addressed through the liquid treasury remnants. Without being able to make use of of this budgetary option the scenario becomes very complicated, and we would find ourselves in difficulties even in facing the consolidated salary increases derived from state regulations,” he said.
