Arona attends Fitur 2022 as a “healthy, sustainable and accessible” destination. The municipality will be present this week at the main tourism fair in Spain within the spaces of the Association of Tourist Municipalities and Canary Islands, which will be attended by its mayor, José Julián Mena, as well as several others. During its presentation, on Thursday, the municipality will reinforce its “pioneer in the Archipelago” role in health tourism.
The municipality will deepen during the fair in its commitments in terms of health security, in addition to addressing a market from which, in the last year before the pandemic, 173,818 people visited Arona, 9.1% more than in 2018. The destination will also be present together with the main representatives of the sector at the XI Exceltur Tourism Leadership Forum, as well as at the meeting of the Alliance of Sun and Beach Municipalities, of which the most relevant destinations are part.
The objectives are to reinforce the expectations of tourist recovery in Arona, to position the municipality as a safe destination from the health point of view –with a commitment to health tourism that is found in its origins–, in addition to reinforcing its commitments to accessibility and sustainability, as well as with major sporting events.
The official presentation of Arona will take place at the stand of the Association of Tourist Municipalities next Thursday, the 20th, at 2:00 p.m. There will be, in addition to the mayor, José Julián Mena, the councilors of the areas of Tourism, José Alberto Delgado, and Sports, Francisco Marichal. In this meeting with the media, the destination will reinforce and acquire new commitments in terms of health as a national and international benchmark. Likewise, the announced Master’s Championship of Spain in Athletics will also be addressed, in which athletes will compete, both in male and female categories, in speed tests, distance and contests. The participants will range from 35 to 80 years old and it is expected to bring together around 1,500 athletes from all over Spain. This event will be held between June 17 and 19.
Arona will be part of the XI Exceltur Forum today, in which the main public and private actors in the sector participate. The presence of the Minister of Tourism, Reyes Maroto, is expected. The evolution of the tourism model, as well as the commitment to sustainability and digitization will be some of the keys to the forum prior to the opening.

Fitur will also serve as a framework for a meeting of the Alliance of Tourist Municipalities of Sun and Beach, of which Arona is one of the founding members. A round table, on Thursday at 11:00 a.m., will precede the delivery of the AMT Smart Destinations Awards 2022 that distinguish the promotion of a smart tourist destination.
The mayor of Arona explains that this edition of Fitur takes place in a framework of “significant uncertainties in which health security and safe mobility are key. Arona goes to Fitur to deepen its character as a health destination and a space that offers health security.
