The City Council of Granadilla de Abona has opened an investigation into the latest episode of water contamination bathing incident that occurred in El Médano, which this week forced the closure of the Central and Leocadio Machado beaches of this municipality, as explained by the councilor for the Municipal Public Services and Ecological Transition area of Granadilla de Abona, Marcos Antonio Rodríguez Santana.

The mayor stressed that his department has located the possible source of infection and ruled out that it is contamination produced through emissarieswhich are found on the coasts of the beaches of Pelada and Los Abrigosbut rather a filter well whose contents would have reached the sea due to the high tides recorded during the month of September.

“There may be a connection between the pollution of the beaches and the tides through a filter well,” said Rodríguez Santana, who explained that “those beaches do not have outfalls, since the two that exist are in Pelada and Los Abrigos. We understand that it is due, rather, to a filter well.”

“We have ten analyzes per month”

“When we have the complete report, we will send it to Health to resolve the problem as soon as possible and urgently,” he added, while recalling the changes introduced by the Granadillo City Council in health controls.

Although the Government of the Canary Islands subjects the quality of bathing water to two analyzes per month, “we are probably one of the few municipalities in the Canary Islands that do another two analyzes per week, which means that we have ten per month, which It is a lot and allows us to know the state of the beaches with great precision,” he said.

The councilor also defended that the closure is an exercise of responsibility. “What is clear is that if there is pollution on a beach, it must be closed. That is the priority: safety,” he said.
