SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Oct. 14 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Government of the Canary Islands has authorized the payment of 6.1 million euros to the maritime entities Fred Olsen and Naviera Armas as compensation for the payment of 25% of the bonus for the subsidy for Canarian residents (50% is paid by the State, up to complete 75% bonus) for inter-island travel in the second quarter of 2021.

This item corresponds to the 586,977 people residing in the Canary Islands who traveled during April, May and June 2021 in these two companies that operate inter-island trips, being divided between the Fred Olsen company, which corresponds to an amount of 3.9 million euros per the transfer of 391,893 travelers residing in the Archipelago, and Naviera Armas, which has a reimbursement of 2.2 million euros for the corresponding transfer of 195,084 travelers.

The total calculation of both shipping companies amounts to 6.1 million euros, which requires authorization for reimbursement by the Governing Council of the Canary Islands.

These budgetary items are made on a quarterly basis by virtue of Decree 222/2000, of December 4, which establishes the regime of discounts for inter-island maritime transport of travelers residing in the Canary Islands, with the regional Executive contributing 25% of the total .

These figures for the second quarter of 2021 reflect the gradual recovery of maritime mobility between the islands after the halt caused by the COVID-19 pandemic last year. Between April and June of this year, 674,295 passengers traveled between the islands with these two shipping companies (between residents and non-residents), a positive evolution of the number of passengers compared to the same quarter of 2020 of 150%, a period in which 269,458 passengers displaced by boat.
