The president of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, on his arrival at the Basilica of Candelaria.Jpg – GOVERNMENT OF THE CANARY ISLANDS

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 15 Aug. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The president of the Government of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, has asked that the migratory phenomenon be left out of the “partisan struggle”, since it is a “humanitarian drama” that has existed for “decades” and that “will continue to exist” .

This is how Torres referred to those who criticize the President of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, and his Executive in this matter, pointing out in statements to journalists that in the Canary Islands there was a “determined moment, it was not the responsibility of the Government of Pedro Sánchez”, in which that all the resources that were in the archipelago were “eliminated, so when he became the Presidency of the Canary Islands, in 2019, there were “no” resources.

This caused the Government of the Canary Islands to have to “give up educational spaces, because it was a pandemic and it could be done, then throw away hotels and finally look for resources that could respond to the emergency.” Given this, he said, who has to answer why the resources ceased to belong to the Canary Islands network are the “previous governments, including the Canary Coalition (CC)”.

In any case, he pointed out that the Atlantic route continues to be the “most dangerous” and several people have recently died on it, which he regretted, even so, he has indicated that the Civil Guard in the official data for June and July “concludes that It has been possible to contain more people who were going to leave in the countries of origin, than those who have arrived in the Canary Islands”.

For this reason, he has pointed out that the migratory phenomenon “will continue to exist, what we have to do is respond from the point of view of the emergency, treat them as what they are, that they are people and, of course, that the Government of Spain , the whole of the State and the European Union clearly understand that all migration cannot remain in the border territories”.

Finally, he pointed out that although the circumstances are currently “different” from those in the pandemic, “because there is transit and people can continue towards their destination, which is Europe”, this must remain “out of the partisan struggle, it is a humanitarian drama”, and has stated that it “saddens him that there are political parties that were responsible at the time” that use it as a “political struggle”.
