The nationalist spokesman, Carlos Alonso, points out in a note that the announcement by the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda to suspend the expansion project of the Barcelona-El Prat Airport “is a historic opportunity that we must take advantage of so that AENA allocates part of those resources to the new terminal of the South Airport “.

For Alonso, “already there is no economic reason for AENA and the Government of Spain to say that there are no funds available for the execution of the Tenerife project, since the works do not reach 1,700 million euros “.

Thus, it indicates that “now more than ever” it is necessary to “claim unanimously that they fulfill an airport that gives many benefits and that needs a deep remodeling “.

The CC-PNC spokesperson points out that his group requested an extraordinary plenary session to be held on September 20 “to seek a unanimous position from all political forces and social agents and demand its immediate execution.”

In his opinion, “Tenerife is playing its future because it is a strategic tourist infrastructure and we must demand that its construction is included in the 2022-2026 Airport Regulation Document and is executed immediately “.

The CC-PNC group will present in the extraordinary plenary session a proposal for an institutional agreement in which, among other measures, it requests Aena and the Government of Spain the inclusion of the new Tenerife South airport terminal in the DORA II 2022-2026 as a strategic investment, so that it can be put into service before the end of the programming period foreseen in the document.

Precisely at the time when Alonso announced these measures, AENA sources recalled that “in Tenerife South, the expansion works of the terminal building, one of the most important investments in terminals that are developed throughout the Aena network ». They add that “traffic forecasts do not indicate that it is necessary to expand further in the Dora II (2022-2026).”
