Santa Cruz de Tenerife to Activate Bus Lane for Las Teresitas Beach
New Measures for Public Transport
The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council will activate a dedicated bus lane to Las Teresitas beach during weekends when there is a high-temperature alert issued by the Canary Government. According to the local authority, the aim is to “prevent buses from getting stuck in traffic during peak times.”
During the announcement of improvements to the urban bus service, which come into effect on Monday, June 22, the mayor explained that this measure will proceed “despite opposition from residents of San Andrés, who have expressed their discontent with reserving a lane to prioritise public transport.” He stated that the implementation will allow for assessment of whether expansion beyond high-temperature alerts is viable in the future.
José Manuel Bermúdez acknowledged the logistical challenges, as such alerts are often activated with little notice. He asserted that “even with car congestion,” public transport “will gain speed and punctuality” by having this dedicated lane in both directions.
Service Reinforcements
In parallel, the city council announced an enhancement of eight urban service lines operated by Titsa with an additional investment of €216,000. They noted that of this amount, €151,500 will be allocated to three lines connecting the city centre with Salud-La Salle, Ofra, and Suroeste, while €64,500 will be used for summer reinforcements on five lines including those to Las Teresitas and the beaches of Anaga.
According to the council, this reorganisation will provide an additional 285,784 seats and an estimated increase of approximately 81,500 annual passengers. Among the measures, the reinforcement of line 910, which connects the Intercambiador with Las Teresitas, will increase from 14 to 16 daily services, adding 212,400 seats with an expected 78,000 more passengers.
Furthermore, they noted that line 946 will be reinforced with two vehicles on weekdays, while line 948 will have specific services on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. The improvements will be complemented by adjustments to lines 904, 911, 944, 934, and 936 to enhance routes, punctuality, and responsiveness to demand.
