SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 12 June (EUROPA PRESS) –
The President of the Tenerife Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, has praised Pope Leo XIV’s call for “co-responsibility” in managing the reception of migrants, stating no territory should face this challenge “alone”.
In a statement released by the council following the Pope’s visit to the Las Raíces Centre and the Plaza del Cristo de La Laguna, she highlighted the essential perspective shared by Robert Prevost, addressing one of the “most sensitive realities” in the archipelago—the arrival of migrants seeking opportunities for dignified living.
Dávila noted that Tenerife “is well aware of this reality,” stressing that “behind each arrival is a story, a family, and often a life marked by uncertainty, but also by hope”.
She indicated that the Pope’s presence at Las Raíces “acknowledges the efforts of those who work daily in support of this reality,” as well as the ongoing commitment of Tenerife and the Canary Islands, which have dealt with a situation of “enormous complexity” for years.
A Collective Response Needed
For Dávila, “managing the phenomenon of migration also requires a shared response, as no territory can confront a challenge of this scale alone. More humanity, cooperation, and commitment are essential.”
She remarked that the Pope’s visit carries “special” significance, leaving a “mark” on individuals and embodying the values he promotes.
“Today, Tenerife exemplifies a way of understanding coexistence—an open, supportive, and committed island that reaches out, accompanies, and welcomes,” she explained.
