Historical Visit of Pope Leo XIV to Gran Canaria and Tenerife
The President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, has described the forthcoming visit of Pope Leo XIV to Gran Canaria and Tenerife as historic. He emphasised that the approach to the migration phenomenon must be grounded in “human, Christian, moral, and solidarity values.” Clavijo expressed hope that this message will resonate with high institutions, both European and within the Spanish Government.
The Challenge of Migration
Clavijo warned, “We are witnessing the implications of the migration phenomenon for the rise of the far-right, which fundamentally represents a regression in human rights.” These comments were made during a statement in Madrid, where he participated in the official reception of Pope Leo XIV to Spain.
Human Rights and Solidarity
According to Clavijo, “Democracy must be fought for every day, human rights need to be defended each day, and solidarity should become a way of life, not merely a specific action taken occasionally out of interest.” The President stated, “I believe this is the message His Holiness wants to convey, and it is one he has clearly demonstrated.”
Canary Islands and Migration
Clavijo reminded listeners that since the first boat carrying migrants arrived on the archipelago’s shores 32 years ago, the Canarian people have been “managing migration with dignity, attention, and solidarity,” often “in isolation, as has been the case in recent years.”
He also expressed optimism that the Pope’s visit might help restore institutional normality, improve relationships, and foster mutual respect, as well as inspire “reflection that can lead us all to be a little better.”
