The Board of Directors of Editorial Leoncio Rodríguez has opted to appoint Dunia E. Torres as the new director of El Día/The Opinion of Tenerife in place of Joaquín Catalán, who steps down after an illustrious career spanning 17 years in the Iberian press. Initially as the director of The Opinion of Tenerife and, since 2019, at the helm of El Día.
The selection of Dunia E. Torres as director of El Día/The Opinion of Tenerife aims to ENHANCE DIGITAL AND AUDIOVISUAL CONTENT for a leading publication in audience reach and distribution in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which celebrates its 115th anniversary in the autumn, continuing the improvement and modernisation of the editorial staff and the integration of the Iberian press offerings in the Canary Islands.
Dunia E. Torres (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1969) holds a Bachelor’s degree in Information Sciences from the Complutense University of Madrid and a Master’s in Political and Electoral Communication Management from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Since 2016, she has served as Chief Editor of the Province for Editorial Prensa Ibérica, where she oversaw the sections on Economics and the Canary Islands. Previously, she led the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria section, accumulating experience as an editor in local and societal matters.
She was also the editor at Canary Islands 7 in 1992 and participated in the Press Office for the Carnival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 1996. In 2001, she was part of the team that launched the first online information portal in the islands, En-chanarios.com. A collaborator for EL PAÍS, she worked at the IT7 company—backed by the Government of the Canary Islands, Telefónica, and A5—to deliver content for the digitalisation plan for the archipelago, where she was responsible for web content and its architecture. She co-authored the book ‘Buildings that Made History,’ focusing on significant architecture within the capital of Gran Canaria.
The Iberian press, established in the Canary Islands in 1978, now boasts a team of more than 1,200 journalists across 27 publications of general information, alongside 70 hyperlocal reports and magazines such as travel and Woman. It stands as the leading communication group in the archipelago through its two main journalistic outlets, the Province in Las Palmas and El Día/The Opinion of Tenerife in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, along with Videre, the premier audiovisual producer for television content.
