The mayor of La Matanza de Acentejo, Ignacio Rodríguez, has recently suggested to the Insular Minister of Mobility, Eulalia García, the opportunity to utilise the old road that traverses the Cabrera ravine (where the mural depicting the battle of Acentejo is situated) to establish a deterrent car park, a sheltered ramp from adverse weather, and enhanced access to two public transport stops, aiming to alleviate the current restrictions faced, particularly by individuals with mobility challenges and other groups.
Both officials visited the main entry point to the municipality from the TF-5 at the LINDE with the Sauzal, aligning with this concept and owning 90% of the land where a minimum of 450 parking spaces could be created to encourage public transport use. The remainder of the land, excluding the boundary defined by the ravine channel (managed by the Cabildo), is under the municipality’s jurisdiction.
Accompanied by the first deputy mayor and councillor for works and services, Miguel Ángel Pérez, along with the Cabildo’s representative Miguel Pintor, the mayor and the minister evaluated the benefits of this project, first observing the island that crosses the ravine above the old route that once linked the island in this area, which is interestingly secured with a chain. They then descended to the old road, adjacent to a substantial stone wall supporting the upper roadway, which also crosses the channel and would provide access to the new car park. According to Rodríguez and García, “the advantage is that the path is already established, paved, which facilitates the project and notably reduces the costs associated with the future walkway.”
Subsequently, they continued along the main road until they were positioned just above the bus stop heading towards Santa Cruz, to elaborate on the local government’s intentions to enhance accessibility and safety for pedestrians to the marquee, thereby shortening the route via the lower back and reforming the existing staircase.
The minister and the technician assured they would examine the detailed initiative, aligning with their pledge to improve mobility through public transport and enhance safety and accessibility in this area through wider pedestrian pathways and additional measures.
