Julia Isabel Martínez Ibáñez: “Respectful Behavior Among Men in Courtrooms”

Is There Genuine Equality Between Men and Women in the Administration of Justice in Santa Cruz de Tenerife?

The judicial system is predominantly characterised by a female presence, not only within senior roles, including magistrates, judges, prosecutors, and legal representatives of the judiciary, where women are in the majority, but also within the general workforce, which includes managers, clerks, and judicial assistants, where a similar trend is observed.

What is the Gender Breakdown Among Justice Administration Personnel in the Archipelago?

According to the latest report released by the Canary Islands government, out of a total of 3,052 staff members, 2,300 (75.6 percent) are women, while 752 (24.64 percent) are men.

Since When Has This Increased Female Representation Been Established?

Two decades ago, the upper echelons (magistrates, judges, prosecutors, and judicial clerks) were predominantly male. However, this is no longer the case. This shift is already evident in university programs such as law and labour relations, which generally attract more women than men. Consequently, it is common to see a higher number of successful female candidates in competitive exams.

What Factors Contribute to This Increased Presence?

Entry into this administration, as with all others, is through competitive examinations, where the principles of equality, merit, and capability are paramount.

What is the Treatment of Magistrates, Judges, Prosecutors, Legal Representatives, and Eros Officials Towards Their Colleagues?

Overall, there is a significant level of respect. While isolated incidents may occur, it is important to acknowledge that harassment by a superior can happen regardless of gender.

Is Work-Life Balance Achievable in a Judicial Environment?

All public administrations offer established rights and flexible working hours, alongside various permits and licenses, facilitating the balance of family and work life for both men and women.

Are There Areas That Require Improvement?

Improvement is always possible. For instance, establishing a nursery within public buildings for employees would be highly beneficial. In the Palace of Justice in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, there is available space for a nursery, yet it has not yet been set up.

Are Instances of Workplace or Sexual Harassment Common?

There are isolated incidents that can be quite damaging, involving either workplace or sexual harassment. Nevertheless, such occurrences are not widespread. The majority of male colleagues in the judicial administration of Santa Cruz de Tenerife exhibit a high level of respect.
