SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE Jan. 24 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The president of the Cabildo of La Gomera, Casimiro Curbelo, stated on Friday that the island’s authority will continue to offer complimentary public land transport, despite the withdrawal of State funding for this initiative following the rejection of the decree, which was voted on Wednesday in the Congress of Deputies.

“The island authority, via the public enterprise GuaguaGomera, will persist in providing free transport, not just for the elderly, students, and unemployed individuals, but also for all other passengers,” the president of the Cabildo, Casimiro Curbelo, clarified in a statement.

In this regard, he has called for “political accountability” to “rectify the situation” so that public funding can be reinstated. Until then, Curbelo emphasises, the Gomero Cabildo will cover the costs arising from the transport grant.

OVER 349,000 PASSENGERS TRANSPORTED IN 2024

GuaguaGomera concluded 2024 with over 349,000 passengers, thereby surpassing the figures recorded in 2023. As such, the public transport company of the Cabildo achieved a new record in passenger numbers, marking a 17.58% increase compared to the previous year, which equates to over 52,000 additional individuals.

The insular Minister of Mobility, Cristina Ventura, elaborated that, for the first time, Line 2, which connects Vallehermoso with San Sebastián while also passing through Agulo and Hermigua, was the route that transported the highest number of people in 2024. “More than 93 thousand travellers utilised this route, which links the northern municipalities with the island’s capital; that is to say, a 15% increase,” she stated.

Furthermore, Line 1, which connects Valle Gran Rey with San Sebastián, once again recorded a substantial number of passengers, specifically over 92 thousand, reflecting a 9.2% increase compared to 2023. The other lines interconnecting municipalities and neighbourhoods on the island also saw a rise in passenger figures.
