SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE 23 Jan (EUROPA PRESS) –
The LGBTIQA+ organisations, Libertrans and Caminar Intersex, have articulated their disapproval this Thursday regarding the potential influence of the extreme right, in collaboration with the Vox political party, in the municipal governance of the Arona City Council, Tenerife. This response comes in light of the political turmoil resulting from the collapse of the alliance that previously united the Popular Party, the Canarian Coalition, and Más por Arona.
In an announcement, the groups, which convey a “meticulous respect” for decisions regarding the political stability of the council’s administration, responded to reports indicating the possible induction of two Vox councillors into the municipal government or, alternatively, that majorities in the plenary could be directly or indirectly reliant on the votes from this political faction.
They further stated that “this circumstance would constitute an unprecedented occurrence in Tenerife’s politics, whereby a political party known for its far-right stance and its direct assault on the rights of women, LGBTIQA+ individuals, and migrants could hold significant sway over the policies enacted in a municipality such as Arona, thereby jeopardising the rights of the LGBTIQA+ community.”
RELATIONS WITH THE MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENT
From the perspective of LGBTIQA+ activism, there is a call for the Canarian Coalition and the Popular Party, alongside other political entities represented in the Arona City Council, to “ensure that if they are committed to respecting the rights of LGBTIQA+ persons and women”, they must not facilitate “in any manner, a situation where the Arona government relies directly or indirectly on the votes from the far-right, instituting a protective barrier against all that VOX signifies in politics across any of its territorial aspects for the most susceptible groups.”
The organisations in Tenerife have cautioned that they will “carefully monitor” the subsequent political choices made within this context in Arona, asserting that should Vox become involved in the municipal administration or if the plenary majorities hinge on their votes, “they will terminate any form of engagement with the Arona City Council.”
“The LGBTIQA+ groups in Tenerife shall never lend their complicity to the entrance of the extreme right into institutions,” they expressed in their statement.
