Curbelo Champions Fonsalía, Tenerife President Delivers Another Rejection

The president of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Rosa Dávila (CC), has once again dismissed the construction of the port of Fonsalía on the island’s western coast, labelling it an “environmental assault.” She has cautioned the president of the Cabildo de La Gomera, Casimiro Curbelo (ASG), that “it will have to be evidenced.” This response follows a warning from the Gomero president on Thursday, indicating he would protest alongside island residents at the doors of the Tenerife Cabildo if there isn’t a “clear resolution” regarding the “connectivity issues in the green islands” before August. “They need to get their act together,” he stated.

In a discussion with Radio Club Tenerife, as reported by Europa Press, Dávila refuted the existence of these alleged “connectivity issues” with the green islands, although she did acknowledge a “bottleneck” in the land area surrounding the port of Los Cristianos during the disembarkation of vehicles and passengers.

Dávila indicated that Curbelo, who is part of the Board of Directors of the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, is already aware of the ongoing planning efforts aimed at expanding the port, alongside attempts to improve traffic conditions through the burial of Chayofita Avenue.

The president of Tenerife has asserted that the port of Fonsalía would be a “disaster” which threatens the only whale sanctuary within the European Union, in addition to the presence of cetaceans. She argues that it is not worthwhile to pursue this option further, especially considering there are “alternatives” such as expanding the port of Los Cristianos or even commercially developing the industrial port of Granadilla.

In this context, she has alerted that the underground project to connect the port exit with the main road has been completed, intending to create a “pleasant” avenue, and anticipates that the construction could extend over the next two years.

She remarked that there is now “more information and studies” available than there was 25 years ago when the port of Fonsalía was initially proposed. This has contributed to her party’s firm rejection of the project, while clarifying that although it is not within the remit of the Cabildo of Tenerife to directly process the project, they intend to safeguard the interests of the island.

“I am the president of Tenerife, and I have had to remind him once already. He governs the island of La Gomera, but Tenerife has a president, and her name is not Casimiro Curbelo; her name is Rosa Dávila. The decisions made in Tenerife prioritise all the islands but also focus on Tenerife, ensuring that no further territory is compromised,” she added.
