SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 13th Jan. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Cabildo of Tenerife is investing over 6.5 million euros in the enhancement and refurbishment of the Seafront between Plaza de Unterhaching and Puerto Colón, as part of Phase 1 in Adeje, along with the renovation of the Promenade at Las Vistas Beach in Arona.
This announcement was made this Monday by the Vice President and Minister of Tourism of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Lope Afonso, alongside the Minister of Commerce and Business Support, Krysten Martín, who both emphasised the significant boost these improvements will provide to both municipalities.
Afonso remarked that the Cabildo is at the forefront of regenerating tourist spaces in Tenerife, collaborating closely with the local councils.
“We are starting the year by unveiling the key projects of the Insular Tourism Strategy and Regeneration Programme (PIER) 2024-2027 in Adeje and Arona. These areas require renovation and updating based on sustainability criteria, which will encourage pedestrian mobility, the refurbishment of urban furniture and shaded regions, making it more pleasant and liveable, and also suitable for the enjoyment of residents. Our aim is for these public tourist spaces to be as competitive as possible, which will also help attract private investment in the vicinity and enhance the perception of quality, serving as a tool to encourage greater spending in the destination and more substantial profitability from tourism activities,” he stated.
Afonso also underscored that the initiatives are intended to be “comprehensive” and cater to “unique spaces” within the urban landscape of the municipalities.
“The PIER is a vital document for renewing the image and offerings of these municipalities on the island. We are committed to promoting the regeneration of Tenerife’s tourist spaces,” he added.
Meanwhile, the mayor of Adeje, José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, asserted that cooperation among administrations is “crucial” to ensure that services and infrastructure meet the expectations of the citizens.
“We express our gratitude to the Cabildo and Lope Afonso for their attentiveness to our municipality’s needs, and we look forward to seeing these needs materialise in agreements around Tourism and Infrastructure, which fall within the vice president’s responsibilities. The focus is on continually improving the municipality, primarily for the residents, while adapting to the requirements of visitors and the main sector that sustains our economy,” he highlighted.
Rodríguez Fraga noted that they had visited “key projects,” such as the enhancement of the seafront between Unterhaching Plaza and Puerto Colón, which is part of the Island Programme for Tourism Strategy and Regeneration (PIER), and also discussed future topics of significant interest to all.
In parallel, the mayor of Arona, Fátima Lemes, conveyed that “this initiative for the Las Vistas Beach Promenade will signify a pivotal transformation for the destination, for Arona, not only in quality but also in the renewal strategy of the entire surrounding area that will benefit both visitors and residents.
In this regard, she mentioned that it would act as a “catalyst” for the southern regions and for the island, considering Arona as one of the significant centres.
“We will continue to enhance Los Cristianos, the municipality’s tourist hub. We will improve the surroundings, the gardens, and accessibility, prioritising sustainable and environmental development in the area. This represents a major advancement for the Las Vistas area,” she pointed out.
FIVE MUNICIPALITIES
Afonso explained that the initiative for the Paseo Marítimo de la Playa de Las Vistas aims to rejuvenate the most iconic promenade in the tourist hub of Los Cristianos (Arona), by reorganising the promenade, providing it with greater width and a more direct link to the beach.
Thus, the entire pavement, street furniture, and flora will be renewed, whilst all facilities will be improved, with an allocated budget of 3,818,630 euros.
In Adeje, improvements and conditioning of the Maritime Front between Plaza de Unterhaching and Puerto Colón were also carried out in Phase 1.
According to Lope Afonso, this initiative involves the refurbishment of a promenade along Adeje’s coastline, an area noted for its considerable tourist influx and numerous hotels and leisure facilities converging on this promenade.
The goals of this initiative include addressing the problems associated with the fragmentation of the promenade, providing continuity and enhancing the recognisability of a clear pedestrian route and access to the sea.
Specifically, it aims to create an area featuring new recreational spaces with shade and greenery, utilising appropriate materials and contemporary furnishings, with a budget of 3,347,977 euros.
On 18th December 2024, the Governing Council of the Cabildo de Tenerife officially approved the Insular Programme for Tourism Strategy and Regeneration (PIER) 2024-2027, commencing with an investment commitment of 18 million euros, which encompasses eight significant interventions.
Lope Afonso indicated that five municipalities are included in this plan: Arona, Adeje, Puerto de la Cruz, Santiago del Teide, and San Miguel de Abona, which collectively accommodate 120,970 lodging establishments, accounting for over 90% of the beds and representing the highest tourist density, resulting in “greater wear” of the spaces.
“The Cabildo is committed to enhancing the quality of the areas that uphold the tourist destination and making them appealing, thereby improving the current situation faced by certain environments,” he explained.
