CMA CGM Sintra: First LNG-Powered Container Ship Docks in Tenerife

The container vessel CMA CGM Sintra, notable for its liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion, made its inaugural arrival this weekend at the Tenerife Container Terminal (TCT) in the Port of Santa Cruz, carrying 890 containers.

As per the Port Authority, it is among the first two ships launched by CMA CGM in a new series of ten 2,000 TEU container vessels powered by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), alongside its sibling, the CMA CGM Altamira.

These vessels were constructed by HD Hyundai Mipo in South Korea and are specifically intended for CMA CGM’s feeder services throughout northern Europe.

With overall dimensions of 205 metres in length, 30 metres in width, and a draft of 10 metres, the CMA CGM Sintra is capable of transporting up to 34,000 tonnes of deadweight and has a maximum cargo capacity of 2,000 TEU (20-foot container measurement unit).

Additionally, the Port Authority highlighted that a remarkable feature of the ship is its Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) propulsion system, which employs advanced technology to significantly curtail emissions of harmful gases into the atmosphere.

This attribute establishes it as a benchmark in responsible maritime transport, in alignment with global goals of environmental stewardship and sustainability.
