Once more, Christmas approaches, bringing with it the end of a year 2024 filled with sorrowful and touching events. Nevertheless, life continues as usual, and at this time of year, many families prepare to gather for a truly special and meaningful evening. Some rejoice in celebration, while others reflect on the absence of loved ones no longer with us.

In numerous locations throughout Spain and the Canary Islands, the custom of indulging in churros with chocolate stands out as one of the most beloved treats among locals. In Tenerife, a notable establishment that has gained fame for its offerings is the cafeteria-churrería La Vega Lagunera, situated in San Benito, La Laguna, and managed by Antonio Alexis Díaz along with his spouse, María Olga López Santana. As 2024 draws to a close, their renowned churros with chocolate are already being sought after by hordes of people on a daily basis.

This cherished tradition, a blend of historical roots and contemporary enjoyment, stems from the vision, dedication, and passion of Antonio Díaz de la Rosa, the father of Antonio Alexis Díaz. The current proprietor of La Vega Lagunera takes immense pride in the fact that this churros and chocolate enterprise was cultivated through the commitment and inspiration of his father. Now a family-run business, it has served the Canarian community for over 40 years. Equally, his wife, María Olga López, plays a crucial role in ensuring that this esteemed establishment continues to be celebrated for its exceptional churros with chocolate, crafted from top-quality ingredients that delight patrons.

The public’s appreciation for the caliber of their traditional offerings, esteemed by many within the hospitality sector, brings “honour and pride” to those at La Vega Lagunera.

As María Olga asserts, “for us, this reflects our determination to not lose focus and to strive for improvement daily.” She claims that the secret to their churros dough lies in the affection that this highly regarded La Laguna family invests into it, alongside the premium dark chocolate, which is nutritionally regarded as the finest. Ultimately, it is a significant source of pride for all Laguneros and the island of Tenerife to possess some of the best and most delicious churros and chocolate throughout the Canary Islands, available any time of year, but particularly cherished during Christmas, New Year’s Eve, and Epiphany.
