The local council of Adeje has mandated the temporary closure of La Pinta Beach following the discovery of bacteria known as “short-term enterococci 310” in daily water quality assessments.
The primary aim of this action is to safeguard public health, according to the official announcement made by local officials.
The council has advised individuals to refrain from swimming at this beach until further notice, noting that the situation is under continuous observation.
Further updates regarding the status of water quality and subsequent measures are anticipated to be issued in the next few hours.
What are enterococci?
Enterococci are bacteria that naturally inhabit the intestines of both humans and animals. Their presence in water serves as an indicator of faecal contamination, which may imply that the water is tainted with microorganisms that could pose health risks.
Contact with water contaminated with enterococci can lead to infections, particularly affecting the skin, eyes, respiratory system, and in some instances, urinary and gastrointestinal infections.
