Due to the ongoing water emergency declared on May 29, the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council has decided to suspend all water-related activities and festivals within the municipality.
As a result, various summer events originally planned, particularly in Salud-La Salle and Centro-Ifara districts, such as the children’s activity Get soaked, have been cancelled, confirmed the council.
Emphasizing the need for responsible and sustainable water usage during this critical period of limited water resources due to the drought affecting the Canary Islands, the city council made this decision.
The council outlined a system with three levels to manage water restrictions based on the storage capacity of main reservoirs located in the Southwest, Central-Ifara, and Anaga districts.
According to this protocol, the council explained that restrictions would be categorised into green, orange, and red levels, akin to a traffic light system. Green indicates no restrictions, while orange and red signify various degrees of restrictions or prohibitions, respectively.
“Any alterations to the traffic light status will be promptly communicated. Presently, the level is at 55%, indicating green status,” stated Carlos Tarife, the Councillor for Public Services.
Moreover, the City Council has appealed for citizen cooperation and the participation of businesses, hotels, and restaurants to ensure sustainable water usage and to adhere to directives from the relevant authorities.
