SAN SEBASTIÁN DE LA GOMERA, 14th June (EUROPA PRESS) –
The head of the Government in the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, expressed on Friday that the care for nearly 5,900 migrant minors under the protection of the autonomous community is “completely unsustainable”. He predicted that without the allocation of military facilities by the State, there might need to be the establishment of tents or creation of what he referred to as “camps of shame”.
Speaking to the press following a visit to La Gomera, he emphasized that the public should not be misled, especially after a year of continuous alerts to the central government about the critical situation, which has unfortunately reached unprecedented levels.
He mentioned that they have been collaborating with the Spanish Government since January to develop a common agreement and text on the reform of immigration laws to enforce the redistribution of migrant minors to other autonomous communities.
Nevertheless, he highlighted that as time goes by without progress in negotiations, and if the Ministry of the Interior’s estimations are accurate, around 70,000 more migrants are expected to arrive in the Canary Islands by the end of the year. Among them, approximately 15% will be minors. This could potentially increase the total number to “17,000 or 18,000” on the islands, making it impossible to ensure the rights of each individual.
