CANARY MUSIC | The Magic Path of the Magician

Meet DJ Conjurer, yes, the one with the beanie. His visual hallmark comes from his passion for Run DMC: “They always wore their Kangol hats but since I couldn’t get one, I became obsessed with bucket hats as they looked similar, and suddenly everyone in the neighbourhood knew me by it and it complements the brand, as it was already part of my essence.” Conjurer (actually Cristian González, born in 1997 in La Orotava, Tenerife) mentions that he was almost a baby when he tried to reach for the turntable at home to play music. At 19, he already had a vinyl collection when a friend gave him a second turntable, and from there, he delved into turntablism.

We know a lot about DJ Conjurer but less about the producer, when both roles go hand in hand: “I even think I started producing before becoming a DJ, but I never took it seriously, it was always something complementary to distract myself, but over time I saw that artists were asking me for collaboration and around 2021 I took it seriously and took the step as a producer.”

After a lot of hard work, the result was released this week: Psalm 18:30, an excerpt from the Bible that talks about God’s path. It is a stunning collection of urban music with a list of collaborators that will leave you speechless. “Each production on the album was a shared moment with the artist, we scheduled the studio session, met up, caught up, had a couple of laughs and reminisced, and then we got down to work on the song.” In this process, the sources of the tracks varied: “Sometimes we kept an instrumental that had been forgotten and other times we created it from scratch, depending on the mood we were in, a different type of song would emerge, and that is a bit the essence of the album.”

In total, there are 18 tracks with their 18 collaborations. Pay attention to the list: Kali Ninmah, AlenGC, La Pantera, Endyel, Dawaira, OG Gara, Yeriot Perro Flaco, El Extranjero, Juseph, Ray B, Osuna G, Wos Las Palmas, Jader, El Ima, Kenzo, Luisaker, Biggie, and Fleeting, almost a who’s who of the Canary urban sound. Some names are missing, of course, due to scheduling conflicts and such. Although a second album is on the horizon, Conjurer currently prefers to take a break: “Right now, it’s just a vague thought as after so much work, the last thing I feel like doing is getting into another album, but it’s not something I rule out in the long term.”

After a presentation last Wednesday at La Movie, the question is how Conjurer will bring this album alive on stage. Here, of course, he relies on his DJ work: “For now, I’m not thinking about doing a live performance, but I can already tell you that every time I get on stage this summer, there will always be some surprises.”
