Last Thursday, the City Council of El Sauzal, under the leadership of Mariano Pérez, held a ceremony to honour the individuals and groups who played a crucial role in extinguishing the forest fire that ravaged eleven municipalities on the Island in August 2023.
The event took place in Ravelo Square and drew a large crowd, where attendees witnessed the unveiling of a commemorative sculpture created by the artist Luigi Stinga. Those commended included representatives from 64 groups involved in firefighting efforts, as well as volunteers who provided support and assistance to the affected population.
The ceremony kicked off with a performance by the San Pedro Musical Group, followed by the reading of the council’s official approval of the recognition. A video recalling the devastation caused by the wildfire was then screened, concluding with remarks from the mayor who praised the dedication and hard work of the honourees.
