Over the past few days, the beaches of the Canary Islands have been graced with an “unprecedented” influx of uncommon brown algae and small bladderwracks, also known as sargasso. Enormous clusters of macroalgae have blanketed certain swimming spots, such as Valleseco in Santa Cruz de Tenerife (as seen in this video) or Playa de la Nea in El Rosario. The algae have been carried to the Archipelago from the Sargasso Sea near the Florida coast.
