Güímar embraces outdoor murals as a draw and cultural element. The initiative aims to promote art in the recreational, educational, and public spaces of the municipality. A group of artists has led the project that promotes suburban art under the Güím-ART project, carried out by the Tourism area.
The proposal arose in 2019, at which moment the current mayor, Gustavo Pérez –formerly the Commerce Councillor– commissioned the creation of the largest mural on the island, developed in El Puertito by the artist Sabotaje al Montaje. Since then, the Tourism Department, led by Haridian Martín, has continued to add commissions to different artists with diverse themes.
So far, this outdoor museum project has six works: an abstract mural on Rambla de Los Pescadores, created by Sabotaje al Montaje, in El Puertito de Güímar (2019); The Women of Don Quixote, also by Sabotaje Al Montaje, on Juan Álvarez Delgado street (2021); a collaborative work to promote interculturality, developed by Dúo Amazonas, at Terrero de Tasagaya (2022), sponsored by the Tenerife Council and Mamachama; Güímar is Young (2023), a creation by Alba González Fernández on Juan Álvarez Delgado street, and The Adventure of Knowledge, a work by Roberto Rodríguez (RoRo) located on Honduras street (2023-2024).

One of the most interesting features of Güím-ART is the use of new technologies. The physical works that make up this project have incorporated QR codes to provide interested audiences with detailed information about each creation, the creative process that led to each mural’s creation, and even interviews with the artists themselves. This integration of technology not only enriches the artistic experience but also facilitates access to information and encourages interaction with the public.
Throughout this year, Mayor Gustavo Pérez sets out the goal for Güím-ART to continue growing and expanding. With that objective, the Tourism area plans to create two more artworks, at least, by the artists involved in the project. This will not only broaden its reach but also help establish Güímar as a suburban art hub of reference for creators of this type of works. Güímar’s mayor, Gustavo Pérez, notes that the themes of the new murals will focus on the primary sector and Canary Islands traditions.

Considering that these are ephemeral works, with an approximate durability of 10 years, concurrently, the City Council is preparing a maintenance plan with a duration of 10 years. The Tourism Councillor, Haridian Martín, explains that the purpose of this plan is to maintain their durability for as long as possible.
