The Tenerife Island Council announced on Sunday that they have received 75 out of the planned 250 new buses that are set to join the Titsa fleet to enhance “sustainable” mobility, introduce new routes, and reinforce overloaded routes, as stated by the island corporation in a press release.
The investment made amounts to €88.4 million and consists of 70% hybrid buses, “which will allow the renewal of the current fleet of over 10 years old, reduce CO2 emissions, and save 30% on fossil fuel consumption.”
“Furthermore, all buses meet the accessibility requirements, allowing Titsa to position itself as the third-largest public transport company with the most modern and sustainable fleet in Spain,” added the Island Council.
To “Titsa’s biggest purchase in history,” the recruitment process of 67 new drivers is being added.
The island president, Rosa Dávila, pointed out that one of the “crucial” axes of the anti-traffic congestion plan is promoting the use of public transport with measures such as expanding and renewing the Titsa fleet, launching two university shuttles, and automatically renewing the transport pass for subscribers in various categories – Canary resident, elderly, youth, and disabled persons – after just ten trips within a three-month period.
Moreover, the average age of the interurban fleet is reduced to 3 years, allowing the company to have its own vehicles and move away from the leasing system that was in place for many fleet units.

“The purchase of new buses coincides with a growth in passengers in all geographical areas of the island where Titsa operates. Thus, the company transported 69.4 million passengers in 2023, representing a 44.88% increase compared to the previous year, with a total passenger growth of 21.3 million,” concludes the Island Council.
