Nueva Canarias-Canarista Block (NC-BC) has pointed the finger at the recent declaration of a water emergency in Tenerife, attributing it to the consequences of the “developmentalist and unsustainable” policies supported by the CC and PP government group in the Cabildo and many municipalities they have governed over the past three decades.
In a statement, the NC-BC spokesperson in Tenerife, Valentín Correa, cautioned that the island is under immense strain due to projects like the proposed new cities of El Mojón, Cuna del Alma, and La Tejita. These, combined with severe issues concerning transportation, water supply, and waste management, are contributing to the impending collapse of Tenerife.
The NC-BC criticised the Cabildo government’s declaration of a water emergency, deeming it “incompatible and incoherent” given their support for initiatives such as the development of 9,000 new accommodations in El Mojón, which would place additional strain on the island’s water resources.
According to Nueva Canarias, the strain imposed by the “developmentalist” agenda is so significant that both the island and its residents will inevitably face a high cost.
Correa highlighted “significant gaps” in the emergency declaration, noting the absence of proposals that have long been neglected. Urgent measures such as the Güímar reversible and regenerative pumping hydraulic work, and the failure to address restrictions on water use in municipalities like Fasnia and Arico, were also criticised.
In terms of water collection, the NC spokesperson highlighted the potential of the Río de Arico dam, provided that its waterproofing issues, dating back to the 1960s when it was designed to store one and a half million cubic meters of water, are effectively resolved.
Although the dam has never been operational due to significant leakage problems, Correa emphasised that with proper rehabilitation, it could serve its intended purpose.
