Fasnia is the first municipality in Tenerife to adopt restrictions due to the drought affecting the island. In a decree, the mayor, Luis Javier González, announces measures to ensure the supply of water to the population in a situation he describes as “very serious,” especially with a tough summer ahead.

The Fasnia City Council forbids the use of drinking water for irrigating farms and gardens, as well as filling swimming pools, tanks, ponds or reservoirs. The decree also prohibits car washing – except at gas stations – cleaning facades, using beach showers and new water meters for the reservoir.

It is the first Tenerife municipality to take these measures after the Tenerife Island Council confirmed it will declare a water emergency this Friday due to one of the warmest and driest winters in history.

According to the Fasnia mayor’s decree, the water reservoirs for agricultural irrigation should be at more than 70% of their capacity “but they barely reach 39%“, leading Luis Javier González to foresee a very problematic situation for the coming summer.

It is very likely that other municipalities on the island will adopt similar measures after the declaration this Friday of maximum emergency due to the lack of water in Tenerife.

Last Sunday, in an official statement, the Council Government, led by the nationalist Rosa Dávila, confirmed that they will approve the declaration of a water emergency at the plenary session to be held this Friday, March 1. The governing group will present a motion seeking consensus from all political parties to tackle as a united front the “serious drought situation affecting Tenerife.”

The President of the Council, Rosa Dávila, made a call for “unity” because “we are facing one of the driest winters in recent history, and ensuring water supply for the population and the Tenerife countryside is a crucial issue that transcends political affiliations”.

The motion urges the Tenerife Water Council to process the declaration of a water emergency for the island of Tenerife and to assess and implement, along with Tenerife Reservoirs (Balten), all the urgent measures that can be taken to ensure the water supply for the population and the agricultural sector, as well as preventive measures to avoid network losses and others related to the rational use of water.
