Fernando Clavijo, the President of the Canary Islands, considers the proliferation of vacation rentals on platforms as “insane”, as reported by EL DÍA about rooftop tents on a residential building in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. “It’s absurd what can be found when searching vacation rental platforms for options less than 40 euros per day,” Clavijo criticized on Thursday during the laying of the foundation stone for a social housing development of 65 flats in La Orotava.
The Canarian leader promised measures against these “absurdities” that “do a lot of harm” to a tourist destination like that of Canary Islands, which “aims for quality and excellence”. “We will not hide. The Ministry of Tourism is preparing a law to regulate this activity. Situations like this cannot continue to occur,” emphasized Clavijo. He believes that behind these cases is precisely “the lack of regulation” at the national level. “There is a lack of regulation and a lack of control means, two problems that we will try to solve,” stated the President of the Canary Islands.
The Municipality of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has taken strong action after this newspaper revealed the fraudulent use of these tents on a rooftop in the city centre, which were advertised on a well-known international platform dedicated to vacation rentals. They have fined the responsible person with 15,001 euros and have ordered the removal of the tents, as they were not allowed on the rooftop.
