A mother and her two children, of Italian origin, are registered in the tent on the roof of a house in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which has been rented out for years through the holiday rental portal Airbnb for 12 euros per night.
According to sources from the City Council, all the huts on the rooftop have been removed and the minors and their mother, of Italian nationality, are registered alongside five other people in the woman’s property who allegedly managed the rental of the rooftop huts.
Additionally, according to the council, the Social Services department is not aware of any issues affecting the minors in question, although they are “pending in case their intervention is required, but it has not been requested at the moment.”
In recent days, following the advance report by the newspaper El Día of the case and the viral spread of photos showing several tents in the sun on a rooftop, the City Council has managed to notify the owner of the second floor, who allegedly coordinates the rental of the huts, to cease the “clandestine” activity.
The rooftop is located on Calle Castellón de la Plana in the Tenerife capital and for this incident, the council expects that the penalty, classified as “very serious”, could range from 15,000 to 30,000 euros in fines.
Apparently, one of the neighbours in the building, unaware of the activity, had reported the situation for at least a year and a half, although it was not until this week, following an inspection by the National Police and a visit from the Urban Planning management, which led to the notification of the cessation of activity, that the rooftop was sealed off and the procedure initiated.
