SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 16th February (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Provincial Prosecutor’s Office in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is seeking a five-year prison sentence for a French man with schizophrenia who is accused of attempting to harm a one-year-old baby in Tenerife’s capital.

According to the report by Europa Press, the incident occurred when the man was walking on a street and, feeling disturbed by the presence of the stroller, “suddenly grabbed it” and lifted it, shaking it in the air with increasing force, causing harm to the baby.

Despite being fully aware of the potential danger to the baby’s life, he attempted to throw the stroller, with the baby inside, onto the road where vehicles were passing, but the mother managed to prevent it.

Subsequently, the man tried to leave the scene but was restrained by the baby’s father, who, thankfully, was not physically harmed, until the arrival of the National Police agents.

Additionally, a few days prior to the incident, he assaulted the baby’s mother by grabbing and throwing her to the ground while she was waiting at a bus stop, resulting in erythema on her hands and mouth and a bruise on her buttock. These injuries did not require specified medical or surgical treatment but took three days to heal.

Furthermore, on another street in the city, he unexpectedly punched another woman in the face while she was walking with two friends, leaving her unconscious, states the Prosecutor’s Office.

The victim suffered a contusion to the zygomatic arch, trauma to the right cheekbone, and a hematoma to the left hip, which took 10 days to heal without needing medical treatment, with three days classified as moderate personal injury.

The Prosecutor’s Office specifies that at the time of the incidents, the defendant’s intellectual and volitional abilities were partially impaired due to a psychopathological decompensation arising from his paranoid schizophrenia.

However, the Prosecutor’s Office deems the actions to constitute attempted homicide and two other minor offenses of assault. They also seek a restraining order prohibiting the defendant from approaching the baby within 100 meters for a period of ten years, confinement in a psychiatric facility for seven and a half years, plus a fine of 156 euros as well as an additional 600 euros in compensation for the two assaulted women.

The trial is scheduled to commence next Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at the Provincial Court of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
