The La Laguna City Council, under the Department of the Environment, has commenced the inventory of public and private facilities in the municipality to identify the presence of asbestos and prepare an official census of the material within the area.
Councilor for the Area, Domingo Galván, mentioned that “the use of this material is prohibited due to its adverse health effects, so this inventory will provide a clear understanding of the locations with asbestos in the municipal territory, categorizing them based on their risk level.”
Specialized company Gisgal, known for its technological solutions for land administration, will conduct this initial census.
The company will utilize an “automated remote sensing” system, analyzing aerial and satellite images to identify buildings with asbestos-containing roofs.
Additionally, a risk assessment for all buildings and asbestos-containing materials in the municipality will be carried out, considering the probability of presence, potential health risks, and the number of people exposed.
Galván emphasized that “this census aims not only to ensure compliance with legal regulations regarding hazardous waste management, but also to protect citizens’ health and the natural environment.”
The mayor highlighted that the initial step with the census preparation has been taken, and the following step will involve on-site inspections by expert technicians of municipally owned buildings and spaces.
Subsequently, a third stage will commence to categorize publicly owned spaces and plan and evaluate safe and efficient actions for asbestos replacement.
