The restoration work on the Montaña Roja Special Natural Reserve, located in the municipality of Granadilla, has been successfully completed by the Ports of Tenerife. This initiative was undertaken with the purpose of rejuvenating its ecosystem, which had been altered by past activities in the area.
With an expenditure of approximately 426,000 euros, the port authority has undertaken a diverse range of tasks over the course of a year. These tasks included eradicating invasive species, and adapting and improving the network of trails. Additionally, the project involved the restoration of rest areas, as well as the implementation of sand and revegetation retaining screens, along with the temporary signage of the space.
Pedro Suárez, the president of Puertos de Tenerife, emphasized that, “This marks the second and final phase of the project, which also encompassed the removal of remnants of military constructions, sewers, wells, and greenhouses. This project is aimed at preserving an area of undeniable ecological and environmental value.”
EXPANSION
According to Suárez, “We had to extend the duration of the project by two months, as it coincided with the nesting period of various species.” These efforts are part of an agreement between the Port Authority and the Cabildo, permitting the implementation of the work while respecting the breeding periods of bird species and the biological cycles of the planted flora.
These activities have been established as compensatory measures for the construction of the Granadilla port, as outlined in the Environmental Impact Declaration of the port published in the Official State Gazette dated February 26, 2003.
