Joroperos clinched the prestigious first prize for Performance at the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival Comparsas Contest 2024, hosted at the Tenerife International Fair and Congress Center. The event drew an audience of over four thousand spectators.
The second prize for Performance was awarded to Cariocas, with Tropicana securing the third place. Rumberos received an honorable mention.
In the Costume Presentation category, the top prize was claimed by the Bahía Bahitiare group. Joroperos and Tropicana bagged the second and third prizes respectively, while Rumberos also received recognition with a second prize.
The awards were conferred by dignitaries including the Festival Councilor, Javier Caraballero; the Councilor for Public Services, Carlos Tarife; the Councilor for the Treasury, José Alberto Díaz Estébanez; the Councilor for Citizen Security, Gladis de León; the Councilor for Culture, Santiago Díaz; and the Councilor for Housing, Belén Mesa.
Participating groups in the contest included Rumberos, Cariocas, Bahía Bahitiare, Danzarines Canarios, Abenaura, Tropicana, Tabajaras, Valleiros, and Joroperos.
The jury responsible for adjudicating the Presentation awards comprised Verónica Alberto Cámara, a Fine Arts graduate; Aliya Akhunova Akhunova, a costume designer; and Lumai Moreno Capuozzo, a fashion design and jewelry designer.
For the Performance section, the jury panel included esteemed names such as Rayco Javier González Brito (Rayco González), a musician, choir teacher, and organist; Sandra Montes De Oca Negrín, a music teacher at the School of Modern Music of the Canary Islands; and Patricia González Toffoi (Patricia Baker), a singer in “Tributo a Tina Turner” and a show producer at Creaciones Artísticas Produce, among others.
The lively event was emceed by journalists Wendy Fuentes and Helena Sampedro, with the Saoco group entertaining the audience during the jury’s deliberations.
