Announced this Thursday, the decision by Granadilla’s mayor, Jennifer Miranda (PSOE), to skip the meeting scheduled for tomorrow, Friday, with the President of the Government, Fernando Clavijo, and the president of the Tenerife Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, along with mayors of Adeje and Granadilla to discuss the tourism projects of ‘Cuna del Alma’ and La Tejita.
During a press conference at the site of a hotel construction project, she criticised the president for embarking on a “political façade” in an attempt to shift the focus away from the Government and towards institutions controlled by the PSOE. For instance, the Arona City Council has not been called, despite a recently approved partial plan and urban development agreement that includes the construction of several hotels.
Emphasising the need for “finding solutions,” Miranda stressed that if all public administrations oppose building the hotel, the plot should be acquired as soon as possible. The plot, owned by the Viqueira Group, comes with a €25 million price tag.
The mayor reiterated her commitment to “re-naturalising” the area and connecting it to the protected zone of the Red Mountain Reserve. She urged the Government to re-evaluate the entire prior authorisation process so that the City Council can revoke the license. Failure to do so could lead to potential compensation claims.
She insisted that what the City Council seeks is a dedicated meeting on La Tejita, separate from projects in other municipalities. Miranda highlighted that only political willingness is required, as the company is willing to sell the plot and the previous Canary Islands Government had already initiated the purchase process and allocated funds in the regional budgets – a claim previously denied by the Department of Ecological Transition.
Regarding securing the necessary funds, the mayor cited the Motor Circuit project that the Cabildo plans to construct in the municipality, which costs almost double the amount of the La Tejita plot.
