SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, January 15. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The island groups of the Canarian Coalition, Popular and Mixed Party (Vox) in the Tenerife Cabildo have presented a motion to the next plenary session of the Corporation in which they will propose that the extension of line 2 of the Tram reach Muñeco de Nieve.
Specifically, the motion requests the Tenerife Cabildo to commit to “continue with the project to extend tram line 2 to the Snowman stop, after requesting mandatory reports, subjecting it to a public information process , and in agreement with the City Council of Santa Cruz de Tenerife”.
In the motion, signed by the spokespersons Lope Afonso (PP), José Miguel Ruano (CC) and Ana Salazar (VOX), they explain that “it is the objective of the Island Council of Tenerife to expand the tram and railway network of the island, conditional on the study , depending on the territory, of the efficiency and suitability of this modal system, as a cleaner and more energy-efficient means of public transport”.
Along these lines, they detail that “the extension of Line 2 to Muñeco de Nieve is the first action in this matter that will be addressed, motivated by being the most technically and administratively advanced option, and to respond to current and estimated future demand. , taking into account imminent actions already planned in that environment”.
In this sense, they state that “this action consists of an extension of only 600 meters, adding one more stop to the current Line that runs between La Cuesta and Tíncer.”
Furthermore, they consider “counterproductive for there to be speculation with other debates in relation to other complementary routes, such as that of Avenida Los Majuelos, which is not on the table.”
They insist that “the only route that is being proposed is the extension to the Snowman, and the next extension will be the subject of consultation with the City Council and subject to the necessary citizen participation processes.”
MOBILITY
The three island groups that subscribe to the motion affirm that mobility “is understood today as a right of people, of a transversal nature, and considered as a means to exercise other rights, such as education or health, more than as an end in itself.”
“And mobility is, today, the problem that most worries all Tenerife residents. Mobility allows you to choose your place of residence or work, access essential public services, in short, which is why it has a important impact on quality of life and well-being,” they detail.
Likewise, the proposal states that “this transversal nature of mobility can be related, among other areas, to the protection of the environment, to the climate strategy, or to the social and economic progress of the territory, because mobility today is no longer “is understood to refer exclusively to transportation”.
MEET THE SDGS
On the other hand, and in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals, the milestones to be achieved would be, among others, “achieving an intermodal transportation system or increasing the use of public transportation.”
Thus, and in accordance with the commitments acquired by the Canary Islands in the fight against climate change, articulated through the Canary Islands Climate Action Strategy that identifies the main risks, “it sets as objectives, among others, the reduction of emissions and the sustainable mobility,” the motion continues.
Not in vain, “in a system aimed at decarbonization and efficiency, with increasingly ambitious environmental objectives, it is essential to address the impact that can be derived from the transport sector, and the reduction of greenhouse emissions is priority not only due to legal imperative but also due to its negative impact on the quality of life of citizens”.
Tenerife, in the last fifty years, has increased its population, currently reaching one million inhabitants and the vehicle fleet on the island has not stopped growing, reaching more than 800 vehicles per 1,000 inhabitants.
“In the midst of the necessary debate on sustainable mobility, guided rail transport becomes an ideal intermodal option whose main advantages can be summarized in high capacity, especially if the service is provided on a reserved platform; excellent energy performance per vehicle/kilometer and that do not emit any type of gas thanks to electric traction,” they say.
