The Minister of Public Works, Housing and Mobility, Pablo Rodríguez, reiterated today in a parliamentary committee the commitment of the Government of the Canary Islands to resume, as soon as possible, the works on the Pie de Bascos Tunnel, in El Hierro, to put an end to the road safety problems caused by landslides that fall on the tunnel roof and prevent them from affecting the road.
To deal with these landslides, the Ministry initially proposed the construction of a false tunnel designed with prefabricated pieces brought from the island of Tenerife to shorten construction times.
In this sense, the counselor explained that “to avoid mobility problems that could cause the closure of this road, which is essential for the island of El Hierro, the Island Council requested the drafting of a modified document that would specify or improve some aspects of the initial project. at the request of the contractor.”
“Although a rapid construction was assumed, with a completion period of 12 months, the unfavorable report issued after the presentation of said modification has forced the Ministry to temporarily suspend the works to correct the deficiencies detected so that, once it is counted With the favorable report, the suspension of the work will be lifted and it will continue,” Rodríguez added.
To conclude, Pablo Rodríguez has added that among the aspects included in this modified project, it is planned to carry out the action without entailing the total closure of the road and allowing traffic to circulate, using isolated foundations and cranes of dimensions for its construction. smaller.
