TENERIFE TOUR TOURISM |  Tenerife, among the 10 most popular destinations in 2024

Six Spanish cities among which is Tenerife is among the ten most popular destinations for domestic travelers in 2024with Paris (France), London (United Kingdom) and Rome (Italy), in that order, occupying the podium of preferences, according to the annual report on travel trends ‘A Year in Travel’ by eDreams Odigeo.

The first Spanish city in the ranking is Barcelonawhich occupies fourth place, followed by TenerifePalma de Mallorca, Seville, Madrid, Amsterdam (Netherlands) and Gran Canaria.

The CEO of the company, Dana Dunnehighlighted that the study shows that “Traveling remains one of the top priorities for people“.

“It should also be noted that 2024 will be a year with an intense sports calendar, the impact of which we are already beginning to notice. In fact, searches for Paris have increased by 41% during the dates in which the events will take place. Olympic Gamescompared to the same period last year,” added Dunne.

Regarding the 2023 travel trends in Spain, eDreams has observed that national travelers have opted to learn more about destinations within our borders, with 7 of the 10 most visited places being Spanish cities.

Thus, the most popular destination in recent months has been Barcelona, ​​with Palma de Mallorca and Madrid closing the podium. At the international level, the first destination on the list among the preferences of Spanish travelers has been Paris, which occupies fourth place in the ranking, followed by Ibiza, London and Rome. Completing the ‘top 10’ are Seville, Malaga and Tenerife.

Besides, Northern Spain has also gained prominence in the choice of national tourists, according to the report, since five of the ten destinations that grow the most in 2023 are located in the north of the peninsula: A Coruña (+124% vs 2022), Bilbao (+69%), Oviedo (+ 62%), Vigo (+51%) and Santander (+49%).

Beyond national destinations, which have accounted for 47% of registered trips, Spaniards have predominantly booked continental destinations (45%), followed by intercontinental destinations (9%).

Spain triumphs among international tourism

According to global data, Barcelona, ​​Madrid, Palma de Mallorca and Malaga are among the top ten destinations in 2023, driven by good weather, leisure and gastronomic culture.

The nationality that has booked the most to travel to Spain in 2023 has been the French, which accounted for 20% of the international reservations registered, followed by other Europeans such as German (18%), Italian (16%) or British (10 %).

However, at a global level, European capitals continue to be the favorites of tourists, with Paris leading the international ‘top 10’, London in third place and other large cities such as Milan, Rome, Lisbon and Amsterdam present on the list.

Short four-day getaways

The annual report places getaways of between 3 and 4 days as the most popular globally (34%), followed by trips between 7 and 13 days (24%), while another 14% concentrate their vacations on departures of 5 to 13 days. 6 days or 2 days (14%).

At a national level, Spaniards also choose 3 or 4-day getaways (42%), followed by weekend getaways (19%), to escape from routine. In addition, data shows that 63% of domestic travelers book up to a month in advance.

Likewise, eDreams has analyzed new preferences not only in destinations, but in the way of traveling. Thus, wellness has become one of the most popular travel trends worldwide; 73% of travelers plan their trips taking into account their physical and emotional health.

An increase in tourism focused on sleep and ‘transformational travel’, which includes activities such as yoga, spirituality, writing and exercise, is expected.

For their part, social networks, especially Instagram and TikTok, are increasingly influencing elections of the destinations. In this sense, TikTok is emerging as the most influential platform.

“Social media makes the world more accessible, providing guidance on budgets, safety, must-see places and hidden gems through the expertise of influencers who followers trust to make their dream trips a reality and not miss anything essential and, above all, photographable,” says the eDreams study.
