Optimizing waste collection and facilitating separation at source is the objective of the City Council of Granadilla de Abonathrough the public company Sermugran, by placing 450 more brown containers (for organic waste) in all areas of the municipality, starting with Los Abrigos and El Médano.
The mayor, Jennifer Miranda, explains that with this measure the people of Granadilla will reduce the amount of garbage that ends up in landfills by up to 40%. In addition, it makes it possible to obtain high-quality fertilizer and complies with the European regulation of recycling 55% of urban waste in 2025, according to the mayor of Granada, Jennifer Miranda.
The president of Sermugran, Marcos Rodríguez, announces the implementation of information campaigns to train and raise awareness among the population through talks, visits to homes and businesses, and educational workshops in schools. «The objective is to remove most of the biowaste destined for the landfill cells, recovering this fraction and using it to produce compost. It must be taken into account that the separation of waste for subsequent treatment avoids higher costs for the administration,” he points out.
In the brown containers you can deposit compostable materials such as remains of fruits and vegetables, meat and heavy meat, shellfish shells, eggs and nuts, remains of cooked food, kitchen paper and napkins, coffee grounds and remains of infusions, corks and matches or plant remains of dried plants and of flowers.
The brown container is intended to collect the organic matter that is produced in our homes. It should be noted that organic matter represents about 40% of all the waste generated in the daily garbage bag. Correctly separating waste at its origin allows the recovery of raw materials and optimizes the cost of environmental waste management, allowing administrations to reallocate budget items to other initiatives that aim to develop the state of well-being of citizens.
The benefits
The development of this program, Sermugran will provide the necessary material to start the selective collection separating at origin at homes. To do this, it will give citizens a kit consisting of a brown bucket with a capacity of 10 liters, a package of compostable bags and an information magnet. Also, the government announces the distribution of a waste dictionary that will remember the services available for the collection of fractions: light packaging, paper and cardboard, glass, household goods, used clothing and footwear, cooking oil and a clean point.
Composting not only reduces waste that could end up in landfills, it also generates compost, a high-quality natural fertilizer that contributes organic matter to the municipality’s soils, and, therefore, improves its fertility. Compost is an organic amendment with multiple benefits for soils: it improves its structure, reduces the need for risks, provides nutrients necessary for plant growth and reduces the need for chemical fertilizers.
