SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Oct. 16 (EUROPA PRESS) –
La Gomera has started the cruise season with the expectation of hosting nearly a hundred stopovers in the Port of San Sebastián. Thus, this Sunday the first ship of the 93 that will arrive to the island during the second half of 2023 and the first half of 2024 arrived at the dock of the capital municipality. Specifically, the luxury cruise ship Island Sky, from the shipping company Hamilton, with a maximum capacity of 118 passengers and 75 crew members.
The president of the Cabildo, Casimiro Curbelo, insisted on the island’s potential “to consolidate itself as a leading destination in the cruise tourism segment,” while pointing out the positive impact that the arrival of these vessels to the island has for the development of the socioeconomic fabric.
“These tourists, who come to spend a day on the island, number in the hundreds, and over the next few months their arrival will be constant, which translates into the hiring and consumption of goods and services from local companies, reaching an average expenditure 30 euros per person,” he explained.
Likewise, Curbelo highlighted the opportunity for La Gomera to be included in the navigation routes of these ships, “since these visitors take this first contact with the island as a reference for spending future vacations, with an even longer period of stay.”
This year, the Cabildo of La Gomera promotes, coinciding with the cruise season, the celebration of two important events for the revitalization of the artisanal and commercial fabric, with the Plaza de Las Américas in San Sebastián as the setting. On the one hand, the Insular Craft Fair ‘Artis Manus’, which will take place between November 3 and 5; and on the other, the Exposaldo fair, the largest commercial exhibition on the island, which will take place on November 11 and 12.
During this season, the Port of San Sebastián de La Gomera will receive the first calls of the ships Spitsbergen -with capacity for 335 passengers-, Norwegian Star -with a capacity of more than 2,000 passengers-, and Evrima -a luxury cruise ship with of 300 passengers on board.
On the occasion of the arrival of these ships, the traditional delivery of metopes will be held, a protocol act that officially welcomes the cruise ships that call on the island for the first time, with the presence of island and local representatives and the crew of the boat.
