This week, La Casa del Ganadero welcomed 195 dogs from the shelter managed in El Ravelo by the Association for the Defense and Protection of Animals (Adepac). The preventive measure was taken due to the reactivation of the fire on the Island. The Cabildo mobilized all its resources so that they did not lack anything.
TimmaLila, Mango, Musa… Just a few names – each with its life cycle behind – of the 195 dogs that the Animal Welfare area of the Cabildo de Tenerife moved this week, due to the risk of being affected by the persistent forest fire, from the shelter managed in El Ravelo (El Sauzal) by the Adepac Association to the Casa del Ganadero, located in San Diego (La Laguna). Already in August, 3,400 head of livestock, including breeding pigs, goats and horses, found shelter there against fire. The reason for the forced eviction was precaution in the face of the emergency caused by the reactivation of the fire that has been ravaging the Island for almost two months. The pets were the protagonists of a new transfer after the abandonment suffered in their day. In the temporary home they had everything they needed for just over two days, from Monday afternoon to early Thursday morning.
There they met Vespi, a Chihuahua-based mix that is so called because it arrived at the shelter on a vespino motorcycle, or Tajinaste, a very restless hound that escaped several times inside the enclosure. He was located. With the help of everyone because solidarity prevailed. That of the island administration, which mobilized all its resources so that the dogs did not lack anything, always with the help of the protector when it came to launching the logistics and adapting the space, and that of the volunteers. .
To the insular counselor of Primary Sector and Animal Welfare, Manuel Fernandez, is surprised by the “admirable selfless work” and “great work” of all those who responded to Adepac’s call and cared for the animals during their stay at the Casa del Ganadero. They even contributed with their own vehicles as “the one who went to pick up in his truck the 50 fences provided by the Local Police of La Laguna to delimit part of the enclosure,” he explains.
The popular politician confesses that “I had four dogs when I lived in a country house but now I am in an apartment and I settle for turtles and birds.” After this personal note, he summarizes: “Dogs of all breeds came to the Casa del Ganadero, but, above all, hounds and those that we call mil leches here, very mixed.” Also German shepherds or what were called potentially dangerous breeds. The Cabildo offered trucks for the transfer, but the protector understood that it was convenient to do it in private vehicles.
Fernández also thanks the Association of Prey Dogs, the College of Veterinarians and other entities, organizations and associations for their collaboration, “who went out of their way.” He emphasizes that “Tenerfean society has demonstrated, once again, its commitment and solidarity in the face of the emergency.”
The Cabildo enabled the venue to guarantee a space in good condition. The cages from the livestock exhibitions were used or an electrical installation was set up in the stable area to provide light.
Tirma, Lila, Mango, Musa, Vespi, Tajinaste and the rest of their companions have returned home, to what is their second home after the one they had one day before being abandoned. The third was the Casa del Ganadero for a few days.
