SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, September 29 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Minister of Municipal Cooperation and Housing of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Sonia Hernández, took stock during the plenary session held today, Friday, of the housing situation on the island and announced the lines of action that will be launched in the coming months, time that he committed to working with all municipalities to mitigate the housing shortage on the island.
Sonia Hernández warned of the problem of emancipation that young people suffer in Tenerife and added that “we need effective policies. Talking about housing is making it a life project, emancipation, family, dignity and refuge. It must be a commitment for everyone and we have have to join forces”. In almost three months, the counselor has already visited and held meetings with 19 municipalities, and she plans to continue with the rest of the visits during the month of October.
The counselor committed to reducing the gap that no longer only affects vulnerable families, but also families with income that are expelled from the real estate market. “Inter-administrative cooperation is key. We must have all the administrations that have jurisdiction in this matter and, therefore, we work with the Canarian Housing Institute to be able to develop active policies in this matter. Access to housing is being a problem serious for everyone. The prices for both rental and ownership are unaffordable,” he commented.
The Cabildo plans to increase the public land allocated for social housing on the Island. The insular institution reaffirms its commitment to the need to guarantee the existence of public land at the disposal of the Government of the Canary Islands for the development of the regional Housing Plan on the Island. The lack of implementation of the same over recent years has caused the ratio of officially subsidized housing to the total housing stock in the Canary Islands to be less than 2%, compared to the 8.5% European average.
The insular Corporation claims housing “as a fundamental pillar for the development of people and societies.” The aim is to “maintain a line of collaboration with the Government of the Canary Islands for the acquisition of public land to dedicate it to the construction of social housing, as well as to urge all administrations responsible for housing to increase the allocation for rental aid.” , including the signing of an additional state financing commitment to the current PEAV 2022-2025″.
