Santa Cruz de Tenerife increases urban transport users by 2.3 million until July

Users of urban transport in Santa Cruz de Tenerife have increased by 44.7 percent in the first seven months of the year, that is, 2.3 million more passengers than in the same period of 2022, as reported by this Tuesday the Town Hall of the capital of Tenerife.

In this regard, the mayor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, José Manuel Bermúdez, points out in a note that this figure is “excellent news” that confirms “the success” of the corporation in its commitment to public transport, with new lines, schedules and frequencies, which favor mobility and greater fluidity in the accesses to the urban nucleus, as well as reducing CO2 emissions, another of the priority objectives.

Bermúdez affirms that intense work is being done to give a boost to the city’s urban public transport, a service in which an investment of more than 13 million euros is made every year.

“This commitment to public transport in Santa Cruz is, comparatively, the largest of all those carried out in urban transport in the Canary Islands”, continues the mayor, who argues that the improvements in frequencies, schedules and new night lines mean adding another 690,000 euros per year, in addition to what is allocated to new, more sustainable buses and the gradual renewal of the fleet.

The Councilor for Mobility, Evelyn Alonso, highlights that from January of this year to last July, there has been an increase of 2,397,619 passengers on urban bus lines compared to the same period in 2022 and therefore He insists that “we must continue to promote public transport, one of the main lines” in his area.

This commitment “has been made clear” in 2023 with the budget increase, approved at the beginning of the year, and which means having adapted the offer to the needs raised by the users themselves and transferred to the TITSA company, adds the mayor.

Among the data provided by the concessionary company for the urban transport service in Santa Cruz, a total of 7,763,044 passengers used the lines in the capital of Tenerife until July of this year, compared to the 5,365,425 who did so in the same period. of the previous year, so TITSA has transported more than one million passengers on its urban lines every month since March of this year, with increases of more than 40% each month compared to the same period of the previous year.

Thus, in March 2023, 1,207,673 passengers traveled on the buses of the capital’s urban service compared to the 781,330 who did so in the same month of 2022, which represents an increase of 54.6%.

This trend continued in the following months until reaching 1,201,695 travelers last July (+49.7%).

In absolute values of passengers by district, the greatest increase obtained in July occurred in the lines that operate in Ofra-Costa Sur, with 327,057 passengers (+53.3%), accounting for 113,652 more passengers in 2023 than in the same period of last year.
