Since Monday DIARIO DE AVISOS revealed the increase of 10,000 euros gross per year for mayor and eight councilors of Güímar The comments against such a high salary increase have not stopped happening on social networks, but also in the national press, which place Guimar as one of the examples of highest salary increases in the countryafter the municipal elections of 28M.
Although both the nationalist mayor Gustavo Pérez, as well as some of his councillors, have wanted to soften the rise by speaking of net amounts (between 2,400 and 2,800 euros per month) and not gross – as if the latter were not paid for by the municipal coffers -, the truth is It is that there have been many who have harshly criticized “such an increase” that will need, as the mayor himself recognized a few days ago, “a good explanation.”
These explanations are located in the population increase -barely a thousand more inhabitants in three years-, evolution of the municipal budget and human resources. An explanation that is by far within the reach of the administrators, who wonder, as has been reported on social networks, how the salary is increased by 27% when the CPI stands at 6%. An increase, in any case, legal, given that Güímar enters into this mandate among municipalities with more than 20,001 inhabitants and less than 50,000, with the mayor’s salary being around 63,888 euros per year, almost six thousand less than what he will receive Pérez (58,080 euros) as of today, but 10,000 euros more than a month ago. Between the mayor and the eight councilors -two are not released- two of them will be 75% part-time (Airam Puerta and Juan Delgado), but with an additional amount of 830 euros per month, plus six trusted staff members (29,540.70 euros each), the cost to the municipal coffers reaches the sum of 636,864.90 euros, more than two hundred thousand with respect to the previous mandate. And all this without adding the allowances for attendance at plenary sessions, commissions and government meetings, which has also increased their remuneration. Attendance at the governing board (mayor and deputy mayors) goes from around 30 euros to 200 euros.
Marbella or Cadiz
This spectacular salary increase in the Güímar town hall was picked up yesterday by one of the digital newspapers with the highest audience in Spain, ’20Minutos’, which compared what happened in our municipality with other similar cases in cities with larger populations, under the headline Mayors who The salary is raised: from the record of the Marbella councilor to 10,000 euros in a town in the Canary Islands.
This highlights that the mayoress of Marbella, the popular Ángeles Muñoz, will charge more than the president of the Government of Spain with almost 93,000 euros per year
Close to Marbella and from the same party (PP), the new mayor of Cádiz will receive double the salary of the previous one. Bruno García has decided that he will earn 30,000 euros more than his predecessor in office, José María González Kichi, formerly Adelante Andalucía. In this way, he goes from 38,826.76 gross euros per year to 68,888, according to the document that will be brought to plenary this Friday. Before, today, the rise in Güímar will be approved.
