The Cabildo of Tenerife, through the Primary Sector area, has held the XXVII edition of the Regional Honey Contest ‘Casa de la Miel de Tenerife’ 2023 and whose first prize went to Eustaquio González Bello with the brand ‘El Producer’.
This past weekend, the Casa de la Miel de Tenerife hosted the awards ceremony for this contest, which was attended by the Councilor for the Primary Sector of the Cabildo, Valentín González, and the Councilor for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Government of the Canary Islands. , Narvay Quintero.
A total of 65 honey samples, from Tenerife, La Palma, El Hierro, La Gomera, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura, participated in this initiative, which, as explained by councilor Valentín González, “seeks to promote the honeys of Tenerife and Canary Islands, as a product of the highest quality”.
The contestants were able to present their products in the category of mulitfloral honeys (mild, medium and intense) and monofloral honeys (El Teide broom, tajinaste, corazoncillo).
The best honey without designation of origin went to Jonay Fernández, from El Hierro, with the brand ‘Aromas de El Hierro’ and the award for the best presentation went to Sara Rodríguez, with the brand ‘Finca Las Pérez’, according to a note from the Council.
The Minister of the Primary Sector, Valentín González, highlighted the importance and “prestige” of this contest, which this year celebrates its twenty-seventh edition and has a “special relevance, since the beekeeping sector has been one of the livestock subsectors most affected by the terrible fire that has affected Tenerife since last August 15”.
In this sense, he concluded that the Cabildo will promote lines of work, hand in hand with beekeepers, “to minimize, as far as possible, the effects of fire on Tenerife bee production.”
