The world of culture in Tenerife has lost a very dear artist this Friday. Juan Galarza Cabrera passed away at the age of 91 after a broad and multifaceted career, in which noted for his caricatures and posters of the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Born in Cádiz but 100% from Tenerife -lives on the Island since he was 2 years old-, studied Commerce and was teacherwork that he combined with the paint and the elaboration of caricatures for newspapers such as EL DÍA and Jornada Deportiva. He specialized in sports caricature, coming to reap the first prize in this specialty in 1981, at the Humorous Drawing Salon that was held in the Italian town of Ancona.

Resident of La Laguna, the City Council of this municipality approved in the plenary session of July 2021 an institutional motion to dedicate a street to Juan Garlaza. All the political forces unanimously agreed in the session to label a road with the name of Galarza Painter Path. Was the author of the first poster elaborated on the occasion of Carnival, designed for the so-called Winter Festivals of the year 1962. The artist ceded the work in 2017 to the Chicharrero Town Hall. It is part of the permanent exhibition of the Casa del Carnaval. He made a total of nine posters for the festivals of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
