May is the month that occupies a prominent place in the royal calendar. And especially on the 3rd, when the crosses and the fires take on a special role. A day in which the municipality receives thousands of visitors, eager to enjoy a Festival of National Tourist Interest, a statement more than earned and that deserves to be extended to the International category.
And like every year, the Holy Cross has once again been the prelude to this festival and has become a true showcase for crosses of different sizes, materials and colours. The residents of this nucleus began yesterday to decorate a hundred logs that are found in chapels, hallways and patios of private houses, and in the afternoon they invited everyone who came to discover them while they shared with those closest to them a glass of wine and typical sweets of the royal confectionery. A custom that not even the greatest of crises has been able to snatch and that today will be repeated with more influx of public.
Adults and children alike prepared for days to show unique craftsmanship in which the most important thing is devotion to the cross. There are many families that exhibit items of special emotional significance: a book, photos, an openwork piece in the Canarian style, fruit or the figure of a saint. The important thing is to share with loved ones and also remember those who are no longer there.
The crosswalkers have returned to honor the motto Live like a crosswalker the night and the day of the cross. Faithful to this, the celebrations continue today with the ringing of bells and flyers in honor of the Holy Cross, the Eucharist and the reception of thousands of visitors.
However, the festival will extend to the entire municipality, where more than 300 crosses can be visited and which, after the procession and the transfer of the holy wood on La Pila street, will live its most anticipated moment with the traditional fireworks. between El Sol and El Medio streets for occupying the most prominent place in the sky of the municipality of Los Realejos.
