All the political groups represented in the commission of Natural Environment of the Cabildo de Tenerife have rejected a proposal in which the non-attached director María José Belda requested to prevent the filming on Teide. The insular Government referred to the Master Plan for Use and Management (PRUG), in the elaboration phase, which will be the one that regulates all the activities to be carried out in the Teide National Park.
Belda has considered that “the old policy continues to be an imperative” in the insular Corporation and has assured that none of the groups present there “are concerned with watching over this unique place.” “In short, we continue with the National Park unprotected, with only four environmental guards and at the disposal of the producers so that they continue to use it as a set”, Belda lamented.
In his opinion, it is wrong to “rake” when it comes to protecting a space considered a National Park and World Heritage Site and he understands that it is “possible negligence” the fact that the area’s councilor, Isabel García, defended in the commission that up to now no filming has caused irreversible damage, but it has recognized, according to Belda, that it was a mistake that permits have been given to carry out several at the same time.
According to the information provided by the non-attached counselor, Isabel García explained that the solution is to limit access to private vehicles at the times when these films are made to promote the proper functioning and management of the National Park.
The area councilor also highlighted as an achievement that the Civil Guard already has a detachment in this space, but María José Belda recalls that in the National Park there is no presence of the Canary Islands Police or the Local Police. Belda believes that “we must ensure protection and stop lamenting the consequences of not doing so, we have experienced this recently with the Cuna del Alma hotel project. It is necessary to implement all the devices to ensure that this emblematic space is going to be preserved and stop putting the economic interests of the audiovisual sector ahead of protection”, adds the non-attached councillor.
Referring to the amendment to her motion presented by the Sí Podemos Canarias group in the Cabildo, Belda considers that it was “a patch” since it conditioned the authorization of filming to the provisions of a Master Plan for Use and Management (PRUG) of the Park Nacional del Teide “that has not been launched”.
