The canaries get affectionate with Alexa. He virtual assistant created by amazon It has become such a decisive tool in the lives of thousands of islanders that they do not hesitate to show their affection in their interactions. In fact, users in the Archipelago have said “Alexa I love you” more than 102,000 times in the last year, according to data provided by the company. Since the assistant landed in Spain in 2018, his presence has not stopped growing on the Islands. The platform has increased its number of users by 36% and Canary Islands It adds up to about 74 million interactions with the device, that is, 202,000 communications between Alexa and its users take place every day in the region.

The Archipelago is also the autonomous community that experienced the greatest increase in interactions in the last twelve months. They grew by 46% compared to the previous year. The province with the largest number is Santa Cruz de Tenerifewhere 38 million requests were made, 48% more than a year ago.

The business development manager for Alexa in Spain, Andrés Pazos, assures that “without a doubt, Canarian users have been a engine key» in the growth of the use of the tool throughout the country. From his point of view, the data from the Canary Islands “are really positive because they show that every day more people choose Alexa as one more member of their homes.” And not only that, “they show that existing users use the voice service more to help them and make their day-to-day life easier.”

Canary Islands use Alexa more to check the weather and listen to music

And the forecast is that it will continue to grow. This is what Pazos believes, who stresses that “in the first four years of travel in Spain and the Canary Islands the trend has been positive and we hope it will continue to be so.” He believes that not only the increase in the number of users, but more specifically the increase in interactions, show that Alexa’s utility is gaining more and more points. “They turn to it for better time management and to accompany them in their moments of disconnection and entertainment.”

But what is Alexa and what functions does it have? This device is a voice-controlled virtual assistant created by Amazon in 2014. It landed in Spain four years ago and has become one of the reference assistants on the market. Since then, 11,000 million interactions have been added throughout the country, 5,000 of them only in the last year. Its operation is simple. First you have to “invoke” it by saying its name so that it activates and once this is done you can ask it or give it an order to program it.

What can be done with it? Alexa functions have two key elements: the commands and the skills or accessories that can be installed to add more functionality to the device. Through voice commands you can make a large number of requests. Users can ask you many types of questions from what the weather will be like, what day it is, search for information or ask you to collect the main news of the day.

But through these commands you can set an alarm, set reminders or start timers. In addition, the device is integrated with Amazon so that you can make purchases through it or check the status of shipments that are already underway. Its functions also include making video calls between different devices or controlling those that are compatible with the assistant.

music and weather

But in the use of Alexa there are differences between the users of the different autonomous communities. According to the company’s data, interactions linked to the Digital Home stand out on the Islands, that is, those that allow the blinds to be lowered or raised automatically or to establish a routine to start the day. Playing music also stands out among the preferences of the islanders and, in addition, despite the good weather that prevails in the Canary Islands for most of the year, the islanders are among those who ask Alexa the most about the weather situation of the day.

There are many users for whom the device is essential to start. Canaries said “good morning” to Alexa more than 265,000 times in the last year, while the assistant received 54,000 “goodnight”. The islanders also have good manners and have thanked him 187,000 times.

The most played song in the Islands is the children’s song ‘A sleep’, to send the children to bed

Information is another of its keys. More than 465,000 times they asked him to check the news and on another million occasions they asked him to access the weather. The virtual assistant can also act as an agenda so that important appointments such as the dentist or the hairdresser are not forgotten or simply so that you do not miss taking the food out of the freezer. In the last year, 193,000 reminders have been programmed.

The device also allows programming timers and alarms. The canaries have done it more than a million times in the last twelve months, allowing them to manage their time only with their voices. The use of this functionality has increased in the Canary Islands by 70% in the case of alarms and 64% for timers.

Shopping list

Alexa can also help them in the task of going shopping since it allows them to write down everything they need from the supermarket on a list. Canarian users have added more than half a million products to their shopping lists. And already in the establishment the list can be consulted through the app of the device or if you use headphones with Alexa.

Music is another of the functions that canaries resort to the most, as evidenced by the more than three million hours of playback. The song most demanded by users in this region is the children’s theme Let’s sleep! In second position is the national favorite, Tacones Rojos, by Colombian singer Sebastián Yatra. Alexa also facilitates contact between canaries. The device has made more than 261,000 calls in the last year.
