Notice of strike in the garbage collection services coinciding with the start of the Carnival in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

The Alternativa Sindical Obrera Canaria (ASOC) and Comisiones Obreras (CCOO) unions have presented a notice of strike in the solid waste collection and street cleaning service of Santa Cruz de Tenerife for February 17. The reason is to claim a salary increase according to the increase in the CPI and protection against layoffs.

In a joint statement by ASOC and CCOO, they indicate that these demands go through a “dignified” collective agreement that includes both requests and that, in their opinion, the company in charge of the service, Valoriza, has refused to accept. “Throughout the negotiations, the company has maintained a very stingy position by offering a ridiculous salary increase and an agreement of between 6 and 7 years,” they say.

For the unions, the company’s attitude means an increase in its benefits at the cost of the impoverishment of wages and the living conditions of the families of the workers, “despite the effort” they make to keep the streets clean in Santa Cruz, with “an obvious lack of personnel and material resources” to carry out his work.

The ASOC and CCOO unions criticize that after more than a year of negotiations, Valoriza “maintains this attitude of intransigence” while the labor collective has shown, they say, “great patience in the face of the company’s attempts to impoverish their conditions.”

This labor collective will meet again in assembly on Thursday to ratify the strike the following day, the date of the start of the Carnival in the street, if a satisfactory agreement is not previously reached.

Tram strike in full carnival

The tram services, attached to Metropolitano Tenerife, a company dependent on the Island Council of Tenerife, will experience a strike in full carnival. Specifically, the mobilizations will start in February, from the 17th to the 26th, coinciding with the key week of the celebration of the carnivals in Santa Cruz of Tenerife with the realization of stoppages during peak hours of the service, and will last until May, in case an agreement is not reached, details UGT.

This call is due to the company’s repeated breach of the current agreement as well as the refusal to listen to the requests made by the union representatives at the Negotiating Table of the Collective Agreement established on October 5, 2022.

In this way, the non-compliance by the company representatives to unilaterally suspend the negotiations that have begun is denounced, as well as not recording the requests made or sending the request for a meeting to the director responsible for said service.
